It shows a lot of wear where the two parts go together. Possibly an attachment for an industrial pressing machine - like for clothing...?

I agree with the direction Matt was going... I was thinking maybe a leather forming vise of some sort... Looked up cobbler's clamps, vises, presses, forms... nothing. Also tried cooper's tools, tinsmiths, and more... I got nothin'.

the following photo shows the text as if newspaper column text? maybe this is used in printmaking? but an old obsolete unknown method, alien to to modern techniques?IMG_5763.JPG

Could it be an early laminating device? The hot coals go in the back with the slide removable cover. The text and laminating sheets are heated to seal together. ?????

Good point about coals Tim. It does look like like there's suit inside... Pie is this correct?

that's a 10-4 about soot inside.. somebody told me it might be a tire dry patch tool, and I have seen tire dry patch tools with the rounded pattern as this has but they are never nickel plated or whatever the finish/plating is on this device..
