Hey recondigger,

I don't know what they are, but i like em. I'm seeing a motion picture camera with stirrups over a post horn. Can't read the back. 8-)

Ever read The Crying of Lot 49?

They are rifleman buttons from around the war of 1812 time frame but I've had a hard time finding out how rare they are or what they are worth.

I found a site HistoricalShop.com--Mexican War that says

51809 - REGIMENT OF RIFLEMEN, concave cuff button, 1 piece, Bugle 16 stars, #1, no shank, extremely nice face and rare...............................................$100.00

Since your buttons are in great condition I would say they are more then $100.00 if this site is correct. I would say anywhere from $100.00 to $180.00

Actually, slightly after the War Of 1812, through the 1820s. Your buttons are listed in the Albert button-book as state/local Militia riflemen's buttons (not US Army), and are shown as button RF-26B and 27B. To see a price at the website of a major American Historical Military Buttons dealer, go to: William Leigh: Dragoons, Riflemen and Navy Buttons
However, please note, one of yours is an overcleaned dug specimen -- therefore it is worth about half the value (or less), because collectors view overcleaned buttons as undesirable.

Also, whenever people ask me to appraise the dollar-value of their finds, I point out that it's best to do a survey of dealers and compile an average of the values, because some dealers' price is 50% higher than other dealers.

Lastly, we should keep in mind that a dealer's prices are Retail, and we will only receive the Wholesale value when selling to a dealer. (They have to make a profit if they want to stay in business.)

Reminds me of a guy i knew who wanted to restore an old civil war rifle it went from about $3,000 down to about $500 after he cleaned it up and restored it. Funny thing is the guy who restored it didn't mention the value would go down because he wanted the money to do the job.. :laughing7:

That being said there are some collectors you can sell to on e-bay that will buy restored or better cleaned artifacts at a better price then what they would be after cleaned up.
