Previous structures?

How do I research if there was previous structures on my property? From an aerial photo it looks lie there may have been something.

I'm scouring the county records to see who owned it when, but don't know what I'm looking for that indicate when and where structures existed.

Topographical maps and Sanborn maps can help you determine what was on the property. Some older topos are available on historic aerials.com.
