I see in some photos that some kind of oil or shellac has been applied to old coins (not super valuable ones). Can someone tell me something good to use? It seems that whatever is used makes the details stand out. I have some old coppers that have a date and/or some detail that could use some help.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

On my coppers I sometimes rub oil or butter on them. Comes off easily, doesn't hurt them. Doesn't last forever, either.

If you plan on keeping any coin for just personal enjoyment, continue with your search. but if you ever plan on having the coin appraised or sold, don't apply anything to the coin; it will only decrease or null out its value.
Don.....

I only use a preservative on copper/bronze coins to keep spotting and other corrosion from happening. I use Coin Care, which is easily removed with acetone without effecting the color or condition of the coin.
