Just found my third one...
What ARE these things?
They are made to hold metal letters so that you can spell your own name and probably had a wooden handle. The letters were held in place with an ornate thumb screw. I assume that ink would be applied to the letters and then the letters were transferred to paper?
The one example bears the name of Mary Baldwin and was found on our property. She was born in 1867 in the house that once stood here and died in 1911.
The other example with one letter was from a house across the road where her sister lived in later years.
The most recent example, without letters, was found in a town park this weekend.
I have tried many searches online but have not found any matching examples. Some have suggested these were stamps for calling cards and could be found in Civil War camps?
Any help or info would be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Nick
