My family and I vacation for two weeks on Cape Cod every summer (for the past six years). Three years ago, I ordered an Excalibur 800 from the local detector shop on the Cape, and hit a few of the beaches near where we stay. In each of the past two trips to the Cape, I had lots of fun getting out early and detecting in the water, but I never found anything exciting.
This year I decided to leave my Excalibur 800 at home, and order a new Excalibur 1000 for the vacation on the Cape. My rationale was that I should have a backup waterproof detector, and if my son ever decides to join me for some water detecting, I'll have a machine for him to use.
So we've been here a week already, and I've only been out three times, for two hours each, to the same beach. On my first trip out, I found a little trash, a few coins, and a nice 14K gold crucifix ring. On my second trip out, I only had maybe 6 or 7 detections in the two hours I was out in the water, but one of them turned out to be a man's platinum wedding band. My first platinum find ever! This morning, however, I got skunked - one quarter, a couple of pennies, and a fishing lure that I could have sworn was a heavy gold bracelet until I saw the treble hook.
I've got a week of vacation left, but there are supposed to be some thunderstorms rolling in which might limit how much time I can detect. You see, I go out from 6am to 8am in the mornings with decent weather, and leave my family sleeping in. That way I am home by 8:30am and ready for a full day of family vacation fun.
So my question to all of your beach / water hunters is this: Do you spend more time on the dry sand, or out in the water? And, if there are any tips you can provide on where in the water is the best place to hunt, I sure would appreciate it. Although I am thrilled with my gold and platinum rings, it is pretty frustrating to hunt for two hours and only get 6 to 10 detections.
