Precious metals on Cape Cod

Detector(s) used
E-Trac, Explorer II, Excalibur
My family and I vacation for two weeks on Cape Cod every summer (for the past six years). Three years ago, I ordered an Excalibur 800 from the local detector shop on the Cape, and hit a few of the beaches near where we stay. In each of the past two trips to the Cape, I had lots of fun getting out early and detecting in the water, but I never found anything exciting.

This year I decided to leave my Excalibur 800 at home, and order a new Excalibur 1000 for the vacation on the Cape. My rationale was that I should have a backup waterproof detector, and if my son ever decides to join me for some water detecting, I'll have a machine for him to use.

So we've been here a week already, and I've only been out three times, for two hours each, to the same beach. On my first trip out, I found a little trash, a few coins, and a nice 14K gold crucifix ring. On my second trip out, I only had maybe 6 or 7 detections in the two hours I was out in the water, but one of them turned out to be a man's platinum wedding band. My first platinum find ever! This morning, however, I got skunked - one quarter, a couple of pennies, and a fishing lure that I could have sworn was a heavy gold bracelet until I saw the treble hook.

I've got a week of vacation left, but there are supposed to be some thunderstorms rolling in which might limit how much time I can detect. You see, I go out from 6am to 8am in the mornings with decent weather, and leave my family sleeping in. That way I am home by 8:30am and ready for a full day of family vacation fun.

So my question to all of your beach / water hunters is this: Do you spend more time on the dry sand, or out in the water? And, if there are any tips you can provide on where in the water is the best place to hunt, I sure would appreciate it. Although I am thrilled with my gold and platinum rings, it is pretty frustrating to hunt for two hours and only get 6 to 10 detections.

Never seen a cross ring. Interesting :)

Wow nice finds,I have a friend in Cape Code that rents out resorts.
That just show treasures are everywhere.

Welcome to the Platinum club!

The Excalibur owns the beach! I'd say the action is in the water, but any place people horse around on dry sand should also be considered. Volleyball nets and the occasional drunken football game and so forth.

Just go with the flow. You're doing great!

Congratulations!

Beautiful Ring. We go to Onset beach in Cap Cod in June every year . I could not get away from work this year but I should be able to make it next year. I find several cork bottles every year at low tide. Lots of history there.

Great rings - I have hunted in the water & sand. Water seems to have given me more goodies, but the sand has faired well also. Ron

great rings !! no ring find would make me happier than that cross ring....... a real gem there........ ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Re: Precious metals on Cape Cod - UPDATE

I was at a fancy jewelery store in downtown San Francisco yesterday, and they had the exact same platinum wedding band in their display case. I asked the guy behind the counter if the ring was stamped inside "PLAT DIANA" and he was surprised that I would know the brand of ring it was. He showed me the ring, and it has the exact same stamping on the inside as the one I found, and the design is exactly the same.

Retail price: $2,300

That put a big smile on my face!!!

Of course it is really only worth the scrap value of platinum, which at .375 oz, would put it at around $476.00.

Kind of makes you sick what the jewelery stores and designers end up marking this stuff up to to earn a hefty profit.

Hello Time!
Man, I'd give a right huh, arm for 2 excellent finds out of 10 detections! Great finds! I've got a local park I like to hunt but with very low expectations. If I come away with (1) good detection from a dig of 100 hits I'm very satisfied because "good" means "VERY GOOD" to me. The other day I actually got (3) good detections; an 1881 Indian Head, an 1891 Indian Head and an 1925 Wheat! Ya Hoo! :)

Best of luck and congrats on your new detector!

I went to point pleasant ,nj last weekend for the first time with my White Pism V and 10 ft from where we had the umbrella I got several signals and found 95 cents in the sand I found lots of trash and 3.27 in coins for my first attempt in the sand The life guards would not let you near the water as the sea was rough however on the edge I got a signal and found a 1944 Canadian penny So I think I did ok for my first time in the sand good luck

Terrific rings. That's the first crucifix ring I've ever seen. I wouldn't sell that ring for scrap value, you ought to see what you can get on E Bay...probably lots more than 476.
