I found this large two piece button within a 5 foot area where these 3 flat buttons were found. the flat buttons probably date to 1820's it is a remote spot in the woods with no trash so I'm thinking the large button is related to the others, can anybody tell me anything about the two piece button? i cleaned it and all that seems to be left is iron unlike the flat buttons which shined up nicely, there doesn't appear to be any design, and the back is missing

I found a very similar button, in about the same condition in Maryland last spring. I think they are about the age of your specimen, call it 1835-70 period. Mine also had a missing back.

any other info? I'm guessing off a coat and prob civilian with the lack of design but I don't know, I'm trying to piece together what exactly is going on at this site ive found, it has a lot of European items including a fair amount of square nails and large iron pieces, but there are also stone flakes and trade metal arrowheads and an improvised saw. I go back and forth between native American campsite with trade goods or a trapper that made camp and possibly ran into some bad luck judging by the amount of lost buttons and gun parts scattered over the hill.
