A $607,000 revitalization project was launched in the city Tuesday morning and will take about six months to complete.

New sidewalks, curbs, landscaping and lighting fixtures identical to those installed on South Centre Street will be placed on North Centre Street from Laurel Boulevard to Nichols Street.
Most of the funding is coming from the city’s Community Development Block Grants, City Administrator Thomas A. Palamar said. He also said $250,000 is coming from the Elm Street Project.
Elm Street Manager Mike McGeever said the development project tied in with the Elm Street Project.
“Now people in the Elm Street area are seeing some tangible results,” McGeever said.
The construction will have only a minor effect on parking in the city, Palamar said.
“They’re only working one block at a time, and they’re taking a very aggressive approach,” Palamar said of Slusser Bros., the West Hazleton contractor hired for the project.
“It’s a short-term inconvenience for a long-term gain,” McGeever said.
McGeever said lighting fixtures matching those installed on South Centre Street will be placed on North Centre Street to provide continuity.
The lights have a historical look with a mock flame inside a green metal and glass casing.
They were installed on South Centre Street in 2000 as part of the Main Street Project, a five-year grant program through the state. Pottsville began the Main Street Program in 1999.
The lighting will also extend beyond the intersection of Nichols and Centre streets to give the Progress Street bridge more adequate lighting, Palamar said.
Palamar also said the project will also include planting 24 trees, the most that have been planted during any phase of the revitalization project.
“It’s a big project. This is going to be some of the most visible and needed streetscape improvement in the city of Pottsville,” Palamar said.
Palamar said he hopes the improvements will also attract some new businesses to that part of the downtown.
He said the city plans to keep residents informed on the status of the project by supplying daily updates via Community Access on Channel 15.
City Administrator Thomas A. Palamar said the project is advancing one block at a time to minimize parking inconveniences.
