Strange dents from the inside.
Almost looks like sticks were put across the mouth of the pot while drying to keep it from sagging.

It look to me that they put lil pieces of stick there so they could form the bump outs on the finished side. But I don't know Never seen anything like it before.

Nice sherd. It is a piece of Punctated Pottery named for the little holes. Since they are in a line it is termed linear punctated. I hate to call it rare but it is really quite uncommon. Here is one of the few sherds I have found in Central Illinois on a late Mississippian site and a link that may explain it a little better. we have punctate pottery rim designs here in the dakotas as well....although they are a bit diff as they go from the outside to the inny side

Were the holes on the inside for a useful purpose, or just for decoration?

Yea just decoration. My great grandpa made that pottery like that. He was full blood Cherokee and whenever his family lived on reservation he said they made all kinds. I never did ask what exactly most of these designs meant. I believe most were just decoration

I have found one piece of punched here in GA myself. I believe it is on the rare side of pottery decorations. Mine is punched on the outside also. You have a very interesting piece I have never seen a piece punched on the inside. Very nice

That's a new one for me.
I haven't seen anything like it down here.
When punctated is used to describe pottery down this way it usually looks like this.
That's why my first thought was some utilitarian purpose.
I'd probably call that something like impressed interior.
I'm still picturing a spiral of green wooden shafts keeping the opening round.

Nice find Gator boy

Welcome to the forum.
I'm probably just over thinking it myself.
Seems like a good idea to make a design that way...pretty creative.
And thanks.

Although the pottery was found in two different places, Does it sound silly to say, They both seem to have the same idea. Could it be that it signified something?

Welcome aboard

I was so excited on Sunday when I found these not much but, I think they're great. May I have some feedback from everyone please.
