Found this in a creek, posting in case anyone has seen something like it before. When it's wet the color is more reddish clay. If nothing, then my most interesting find of this hunt was a petrified wood letter "J" for for my son Jonah, lol!

And the petrified wood "J" [emoji12]

It certainly looks odd to be natural - but totally possible. If it is pottery then you might expect to find more of it in the area at similar depths. I'm sure I'm from a different area & the time periods/tribes vary, but most my pottery is chunkier. Grittier. They crushed rocks & included it as filler. Often have simple, naturally made patterns too. Some did make smooth clay pottery though (availability). Very difficult to age or even I.D most of this stuff. Sorry, but I don't think that's pottery. Im totally amateur btw. There are certainly some ppl here that can help though. Good pics.

Thanks hot diggity, really appreciate the helpful comments. I saw your "chunkier" picture and it got me thinking about a piece I picked up a while ago and had been sitting in my "maybe something" pile. Here it is, any thoughts?

Yeah, that's the stuff! If you remember where you found it (I'm guessing near a river), hit that area good, you'll find out how deep & you "should" find more. Flaked stone tools perhaps aswell. Back breaking & dirty but lots of fun. HH
PS: I hope that's not a fossil imprint. I don't think so. Fossils are cool though.

Thanks hd. Lol, re. where I found it I'm not positive - I've narrowed it down to the most likely hunt, but I covered several sites along a 3 mile hike. Doh! Although, I must say that the edges on the grooves on my piece seem awfully "defined" for an artifact, so I'm wondering about that a bit [emoji1]
