Today i started one of the new fields. Signs were not that bad with an old 1600s farm built on roman basement nearby. It is very small, about 50x100 metres. I had a look before at an small not planted part and got some coins and a medieval crucifix. It's harvested now and i hit some rows the afternoon.

Roman pottery, no roman coins but modern 1800s coins, heart shaped medieval strap end, buckle, buttons, lead, frag of a crotal bell and a brass piece from what i think it's the butt plate from a pistol. Any suggestions are welcome! And the usual bits and pieces. Another day without silver....must be a hard autumn to get my average up...

I always like to see those 14th C buckles pop up, looks like there is potential in that field, with a bit of clearing.

I agree, that looks like the butt piece from an old pistol.

Nice finds, even without any precious metal. I was surprised to see the lock with the key still in it. I found an old Yale padlock this week and it had the key still in it, too. I thought I was the only one. And yes, I did dig it with your shovel. Man, I LOVE that shovel. I don't use it in yards but it's the bomb in fields. I haven't found much to speak of this year, a couple of silver coins and a silver ring and pendant. It's good just to be out, though. Here in Oregon we've got to enjoy the sun when we can.

Best wishes,

Chuck

Yep,it IS the butt cap to a pistol.Great finds!!

Keep saving that brass Lu. I just called the scrap yard, brass is $1.70 a pound. Is there much value in those old coins? Good luck.

Hi Chuck! I thought the same. Was my first padlock with key.... Glad to hear that you're happy with your shovel. These are killer in the field!

Hi Tim! Most of these prussian coins are not worth a second look. Too bad on condition when dug in a field and almost no value. I just rinse them with water and throw them in a jar. Only silver ones are kept but they are worth not much too. Better coins start with a 17xx here. And sure! I keep that brass! In a good year i have between 30 and 40 pounds on casings, bullets, driving band fragments.

looks like the buttplate of a flintlock pistol to me. cool!
