If you come across an abandoned building, whether it be an old house, farm, or any other ruin, and it is NOT posted for no trespassing, do you consider it fair game or do you track down the owner and ask for permission?
Guess I could ask the same for an empty house that is for sale. Fair game?
My wife says I should stop trying to find the owners on places that aren't posted. Maybe she's right.

I think i`d try to find the property owner of any old house and ask ,they might have more property, if not the cops might show up.Giving alll MDers a bad name
Thanks Gary G.A.P.metal

No Trespassing signs are like the phone booths in Pennsylvania, a thing of the past! Walk onto any private land without permission, you ARE trespassing!!!!!

I use the property maps to see who owns the land first. If it's government I go for it. If it's a developer I go for it (as long as they are not working on it yet). I never ran across one owned by a bank (like a foreclosure) but if the property looked run down and not cared for I would probably go for it. That being said I am still respectful on any property and would leave it as I found it. I also would not take anything I thought would be of value to the current owner, whoever it may be.

here's my take on the subject.......... trespass violation cannot be enforced in
Pennsylvania, unless a land owner has placed NO TRESPASSING signs at
intervals not to exceed 50
feet around the entire property. The signs must be signed, dated, and
replaced annually. Signs must be placed on their own standard, not on
trees or posts.

i've also discussed this with my wifes uncle who is a township cop and asked him what the penelty would be if the land owner or nosey neighbor would call, i was told i'd be asked to leave if it was the landowner who made the call, if i would return after being told to leave or refused to leave then i'd be writen up

Dogpound is correct, BUT!!! Some land and property owners are nuts! I am in a situation currently with a neighboring land owner who insistes that I and every one who borders him is tresspassing. We are not tresspassing on him. He carries a hand gun and patrols his property looking at the other property owners with binoculars. It is so bad I went to my lawyer and had a letter written to him. Myself and others contacted the state ploice and informed them of his threats and actions. What I am getting at is you never know what sort you will run into. If you talk to the land or property owner first than you know where you stand, you either have permission or not. Remember PA. has passed the Castle Doctrine, which states the use of deadly force any where you have a right to be. Be it on public or privaite property. All you need to have is a nut case property land owner like my neighbor and you could wind up shot.
I will always ask, and if i can't find the owner I don't go.

Funny you mention the developer part. I found a place I would love to hit, and since it's going to be developed soon, I thought it wouldn't matter if I was there. However, I can't seem to get any reply whatsoever from the land owner.

let me state that i'd only hunt the site if its unmaintained, abandoned and no vacant homes are on the site. no one like dealing with psycho landowners so its always best to ask permission when possible

There are a few fields around me that are owned by developers. Some are farmed and some are not. I have detected them but do not if there is a crop. I never had any problems.

Kinda what I like to hunt. I'm in the school of "Not posted, free ticket" But as you said, only the ones that are obviously uncared for, which means they just don't care at all. And always far enough from houses that ARE occupied. I just don't like people....and there are tons of foundations scattered everywhere in fields of nothing and back in the woods.

It is important to see those abandonded ones that are part of someone elses property. That's where you'll get yourself in trouble. That's why I say to stay away from those with occupied houses nearby.
