I've had this old copper for maybe two years. Every now and then I will get it out and try to id
it. Looking in the Red Book tonight. To the right above the head seem to be ( 11 ) and then
R E theres more there. I need to clean it to get more detail. How should I clean it?
On the back to the left is BRI to the right is NIA. The date seems to be 1787?
Here are a couple of pictures. The best I can do with the camera I have.
Thanks for any help you can give me with this coin.

Clayton

The top pic is the image of Britannia, the female figure that symbolizes Great Britian or the British Empire.
GEORGIVS .-II . REX .
Laureate, cuirassed bust left
BRITAN_NIA .
Britannia seated left, branch upward in right hand, spear in left, shield at side, date in exergue

Similar in design to the farthing shown on this page: http://www.beastcoins.com/World/GreatBritain/GreatBritain.htm

It's a halfpenny.

Probably 1737 if the last digit is a 7 and not a 3. Hard to tell.

Thanks everyone. I'm using what you post here to find out more about it.
It's interesting to me to find out just what type coin it is. I hope I can nail
the date on it.

If you're sure the last digit is 7, it's 1737.

George II halfpennies date 1729-1754. You have the young bust which was not in use by 1747, so there's only one possible date... 1737.

My coin is larger than a quarter, a little smaller than fifty cent.
I will keep looking.

Ok I'm losing you here. It's a British George II Halfpenny.

The site I got the pictures from said the coin in the picture was a British George II Halfpenny.
I admit I know very little about these coins. The Morgan silver dollars, I have a little knowledge
of. That doesn't help here. Thanks for identifying the coin. I was just trying to give a size comparison
of this coin.

You'll have to remember to avoid that site. :D
