Dug a large caliber bullet yesterday in the back yard of a house built in 1912 and posted pics here. Well just a second ago I dug up one nearby still in its case. This house happens to be about a mile from an air force base. Another neighbor told me a few days ago about the base finding munitions that were buried with live flu virus. The idea was to use them on an enemy base and everyone would get the flu. Probably not this bit I rinsed my hands off well. Note: there's some kind of wire/fuse holding the bullet to the mangled case.

I left this one against a tree just in case lol

I think you may have stumbled onto some trench art. projectile appears to be 50cal base seems from a larger shell. Is the shell soldered to the base? Could be some kind of a fuse. in fact the base has wrench holes to facilitate screwing in and out. Appears to have threads on the base.

Dunno man but if it still looks somewhat intact AND has wires in it I'd be careful about messing with it.....interesting though!

I see folks handling ammo on here weekly. We just had two guys blow themselves up scavenging scrap metal on a range nearby. Since most have not seen the damage just a detonator cap from a large caliber round can do, it doesnt surprise me folks will play with this stuff. I dont mess with munitions period. The fact it hasnt gone off yet doesnt mean much. Even if it some sort of delivery device, some of that stuff can live for years. Im thinking a flare at this point, so you didnt get a pm instead. Flares are a very large part of training exercises and used in large volumes. Great pains are taken to not use live ammo around the civilian sector. Get some help to id this, may wanna call the military or local police just to make sure. What ever you do make sure its deactivated by a professional.

If you read the end of my post I said I left it there at a tree just in case. I made the post out while digging. The copper jacketed bullet sounded like a coin so in this old residential backyard I dug it not expecting a projectile. The handling ended promptly after I got it out of the hole and against a tree.

Also not sure what you meant by " I think it's a flare so that's why your not getting a pm" but it's not a flare. The projectile is copper or bronze or whatever the .50 caliber bullets are made of but it's larger than a .50.

Some type of tracer........jmho

The lower portion is a fuse probably from a projectile. I know it was not manufactured the way you found it. Top projectile portion appears to be a .50 cal bullet as mentioned already. Ordnance that contain electrical components are influenced by electro magnetic radiation. I would imagine a metal detector emits EMR to some extent. I know that cell phone in your pocket does. A find like this should be reported to your local EOD unit.

Nonsense and gibberish. If ANYONE finds ANYTHING like this they should do what the "MACHO INNER VOICE" tells them to do: A) Plow the tip of the projectile with a shovel/rock/hammer B)Throw it in the fire and watch it from an unsafe distance. But then again ... not everyone is manly enough to do the right thing IMHO.

Lol. Jesus loves baby's and ******s. You sound safe.
