need a bit of help -- today I ran across a rather odd set of buttons made into french style cuff links --and several waterbury co buttons --- anyone know appoximate values -- I'm a bit new to buttons but think I may have stumbled across a few nice ones --

the first one --- rebel naval button large outer coat size -- on front it has --- CSN under a fouled anchor on top of two crossed cannons --- the gilt is gone but other wise it looks very nice --on the back it says FIRMIN & SONS 153 STRAND LONDON then a small dot. --- where the shank would normally be a french cuff link type post & crossbar device was braised into place (very nice done I must say)---on the cross bar it says "1/20 - 12 K.G.F."

the second one --- looks either civil war or possibly indain war era -- union eagle with wings spread in the sheild on the chest is the letter "A" (ITS RAISED ABOVE THE SHIELD LEVEL)--(artillery officers button-- large outer coat size) in it left claw is a olive branch in the right claw is 3 arrows --- its gilt is intact ---on the rear it says "PETTIBONE MF 'G CO (small dot) CINCINNATI (smalldot) ---there is a ring of small dots toward the center --- agian where the shank would normally be it too has had a french style cufflink post and crossbar attached by braising (again nicely done)--on the cross bar it says "12/20 G.F. PAT2472958" -- (its a 1949 cufflink pat by jacob oldak) --

there was also a large coat sized button marked on the rear -- WATERBURT BUTTON CO. CONN
on the front was an eagle with a anchor held vertically in in claws with 3 cannonballs below it --there was 13 stars in a circular pattern towards the rim gilt and shank intact

plus the was 1 med button and 5 small buttons with the same eagle grasping an anchor with 3 caanonballs and 13 stars in a circular pattern on the front but a slightly differant back -- they say WATERBURY BUTTON CO. --- gilt and shanks intact but one of the small buttons has a bit of gilt gone around the head and upper wing area

looked up the FIRMIN BUTTON ONLINE ---- SEEN ONE JUST LIKE MINE BUT WITH ITS SHANK AND GILT INTACT -- THEY WERE ASKING $1300 BUCKS FOR IT ? is it that rare? --- I'm a bit new to buttons but I picked them up cause they looked like civil war era buttons to to me -- did I hit "paydirt" without even knowing it ?--- the two mismatched french cuff buttons would made a great pair (if worn together) -- they look like the real deal to me and the back marks seem correct ---help!!

You must have been looking at the CW Relic man's site.

A Confederate Navy button is a very good button but like coins there is a huge difference between mint and "VG". I don't know much about CW values but I bet it's still worth a lot more than you paid.

yes it was at relic mans site that I found the similar FIRMIN & SONS 153 STRAND LONDON (dot) CSN naval button his of course still has all the gilt and its shank is intact (ie is in perfect shape) --- mine the gilt is gone and shank has been replaced with a with a french cuff link type post , however the body of the button is in fine shape. I'm working on getting the wife to post a photo for me --- Ivan

I can give you some back mark dates... I dunno if it's of any help to you.

In 1875 the firm became a Ltd Co with these addresses:
Firmin & sons. 153 The Strand. (1875-1894)
Firmin & sons. 13 Condiut St. "
Firmin & sons. 20 Stanhope St. "
Firmin & sons. St. Martins Lane. "
Firmin & sons. Globe Works. "
Firmin & sons. Cork St. (1915)
Firmin & sons. 81 Ford St., London. (1968)
Firmin & sons. Newtown Row. Birmingham. (from 1971)

PETTIBONE MFG CO. 1880-1920

I don't think Relic Man takes a huge loss on anything... I can tell you that. :)

Looking forward to your pictures :)

Since it is marked London, it should be noted that England built some gun boats for the Confederate Navy. Probably made some uniforms too. One of the chief exported products from the south to England was cotton to be made into cloth. Very interesting button.. A picture would be great ! Monty
