I found this solid one piece brass item in a CW camp occupied by both Confederate & Union troops in 1863 near Vicksburg, MS. I got some pliers and straightened out the disc portion. It has an attachment hook on back of the disc. Could any buckle experts help me with this identification. buckle.jpgbucklebackside.jpg

I see a what looks like attachment hooks on the back. It also looks like the object might be copper due to the reddish color from where you straightened it. We're any buckles made of copper? Great find whatever it is!

You can also see where it has been broken off. It was found in a plowed field so it's not pristine but I'm wondering if its a one piece tongue buckle. Most tongues had a wreath portion that they interlocked with but that wouldn't be the case with mine. Mine might have had a belt loop (broken off) and the small attachment hook on the back of the disk went into the belt hole. Has anyone seen a one piece tongue like this? IF that is what it is.

I think the book clasp has a hook, too. I'm not sure ACW buckles were made of copper. Who knows?
