I found this button yesterday and was super excited to see a cross drilled shank. Flipped it over and saw the huge 5 on then front. I thought for sure it was rev war. But that 5 keeps me thinking its newer. Its a large coat sized. Please info is appreciated, thanks. I've already sent a few emails out to some experts. Waiting for a reply still.

Still looking for info. Crusader? Cannonballguy? Maybe its a hat shako or something more uncool? Lol. I haven't had anything look close yet. Still waiting on Tices reply.

Cannonballguy could you shed some light. I've contacted many experts and no one is quite sure. I'm leaning to Spanish due to the drilled eye shank. Thanks

SouthJerseyJim, since you asked for me to comment...
Note that the number's top-bar is curved, and the number's "tail" ends in what resembles a comma. The "style" of number on the button is antique Continental European. You can view examples of that number-style on French Army regimental buttons here:

but please note, the French regimental buttons do not show ONLY a number, like your button does.

I've seen that number-style, and nothing but a number, on late-1800s through early-1900s Spanish and Prussian (German or Austro-Hungarian) army regimental buttons... not on American or British buttons. That's about all I can tell you.

Thank you for the input. Do you know if these late 1800s buttons used drilled eye shanks? And were they one or two pieces being that new I'd imagine 2. Thanks again.
