I found this metal detecting and when searching google images related to my find, platinum came up. I don’t know if it could possibly be platinum. My platinum acid tester came up positive. I don’t know what to think. B692B7EB-DB69-44B6-88F7-53030E98C8EC.webp

That looks like it was melted at some point. Platinum melts at better than 3100f. Was it found where there may have ben a really hot fire?

It was found in the sand in a part of the country where platinum nuggets exist. There was no fire that I know of and it was pretty deep.

Camp fire nugget, again, imo.

If you google platinum you will see a bunch of pics of dull grey rocks.

There are more than a few things that can have that general appearance, so images only go so far in aiding identification. Anywhere in the woods in North America, the melted aluminum cans are the most prevalent. And well match what you have provided thus far.

Acid tests are problematic, in my opinion, unless you are well experienced in their use. I have met way too many people who have mistaken brass for gold after testing. Not knocking you, I simply do not know your experience level with testing solutions.

Is it heavy in comparison to an equal size piece of steel, copper, or brass? Or is it light in comparison?

Which area was it found in? I do know platinum can be found in areas of Oregon south of the Rogue and in the general area of the Smith and Klamath in northwest California. Somewhere in the attic is a report of known platinum occurances in California, but I do not feel like looking for it.

Time for more coffee.

Melted aluminum has a specific gravity of about 2.7. Platinum would be about 21. HUGE difference.

A good place to start would be to measure the density/specific gravity.

I've found melted coins that look similar. What kind of detector do you have? What was the VID # ?

Need some idea of the size...quarter size, inches, etc...something

As many others have stated, the specific gravity will usually nail it...

I found this also the same day as what I thought may be a platinum nugget. 5059FB39-D07C-4E0B-8559-8DB69FA419B3.webp

Platinum ore?

A8F51103-76A2-4AFD-9188-35873D4E526D.webp when doing a google images search this came up as platinum ore. I realize it may not be but it was strange because I found it around what I thought were platinum nuggets. The nuggets are most likely not platinum but it was odd that this rock like specimen was coming up as platinum in my online search. Maybe just wishful thinking.

Thank you for your help. I weighed it and it’s only 1.41g. I have some copper that’s smaller but weighs more. I guess that’s my answer.

Just wondering if there was a iron smelting foundry near by. I know a guy with a real old iron foundry on his property who found a legit ( tested and certified ) platinum nugget from foundry slag. Metal refiners used to hate platinum because it wouldn't alloy and its real hard to get rid of.
