Possible old silver? Solved - 1700's Buckle

Found this item searching a residence that I was told dates back to the late 1600's. Was at only about 5" deep. I did not clean it except under some running water to remove dirt. Could it be silver? Was told by someone it could be some type of colonial buckle. It hinges in the center as a tried to show in the photos. Missing tooth was not from my digging it out. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Possible old silver?

Jeez that's a nice Georgian buckle example! Almost complete buckle with multi-stud chape and tongue.

I do believe yours would date 1760's to late 1790s.

Is it hallmarked at all?  All these buckles were hallmarked up till 1739 - then from 1740 through the 1790s pieces weighing less than ten pennyweights were exempt from hallmarking.  AFTER 1790 all silver buckles were hallmarked.

Montana Jim,
There are no hallmarks on this buckle. What type of buckle would this have been? A belt buckle?
Thanks so much for the info!

Given it's age that really is in good shape, even with the split and missing tine. I agree that it has every appearance of being silver.
-good info Jim (as always).
