Possible Mission-Era Item (unknown)

This item was found inside of a ruined mission quadrangle in Central California (I am in a position to legally possess it). I initially believed it to be a housing for a type of handle, but the squared inside may lend itself better to a latch of some sort.

Length: approx. 2.75 in
Width: approx. 1.0 in

The item appears to be cast, with possible handmade threading. The edges and details appear to be hand tooled as well. It is heavy for its size. A gentle cleaning with a toothbrush removed some of the clay/soil from the threads. A light-blue oxidation appears on top of the patina, in some areas.

I have had some really good success with members of the community and their ability to ID unknown items. Thank you all in advance...

It appears to be made of copper (or alloy thereof). It is non-magnetic and hard. It has a metal 'ring' to it when it accidently falls out of your hand onto the desk (yikes!).

I'm thinking it either could be an decorative wall anchor for another item OR maybe the knob for a petcock.
