Can anyone help with an I.D. of this possible meteorite? It has all the characteristics of one. It was found in the back of a salt truck. It's about the size of a fist.

Is it very dense/ heavy? Does a magnet stick to it, where was it found, dimensions ...

I think it's a meteorite - wrong!

Well I'm no expert but who knows!
Do you see any signs of an impact?
Meteorites usually have signs or chip from it from impact?
There are places you can send it to be tested!
You could also cut away a piece , it should have multiple colors as apposed to a solid one color pigment! Google it and see!
I've also thought I had a meteorite and was wrong. I sent mine to the meteorite men ( from TV) for analysis, turned out to not be a meteorite!

A rock that size would have some value!

I chipped away the crusty outer layer and filed it with a file and there's tiny metal flakes inside. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will be real. Thanks for the help!

I think I have one also ,getting ready to send out a sample Monday . Did You get a Readout from the Meteorite Men Flyadive ? Did they Charge anything for the test? I found a place called New England Meteroriticle society and they charge $20.00 for a standard test 'Test that takes 10-14 days" More Cash for a Fast answer. DSC_0033.JPGDSC_0049.JPGDSC_0042.JPG here is the one I found , It shows up on My Garrett 350 as Nickel and Iron. has Flow marks and a Crust, pulls on a magnet only w/ the String Test . I think Its a Stoney Meteorite? I Hope I'm right and Its Not a Meteorwrong? But 99.9 percent tested Are Wrong :(

There was a charge, I sent 5 specimens to them and all came back as meteor wrong! I can't recall how much I payed, it wasn't very expensive !

Do the streak test. Scrape it on the back side of a ceramic tile or your toilet tank lid (unglazed side). If it leaves a streak, it isn't a meteorite. Black grey streak means it's magnetite, red brown streak means it's hematite.

I'm not an expert, but this test should give a good idea if it's a meteorite. I've found a couple of weird looking rocks over the past year and they both failed this test.

My thought is a piece of Iron Ore, and looks like a sample of taconite, but is a bit large for one of those I think?. Further testing should be consider on your specimen. This is a almost pure iron meteorite in my hand found in the Republic of Namibia I think I was told? in the office of a biz associate I deal with who's sole business is dealing in mineral specimens form all over the globe. As you can see his piece is clean of any type of surface crusting as your sample, but I'm not so sure that would be an indication of what it is you have? but I believe any object that has come thru the earth atmosphere would be cleaned up very well in that violent condition. Will your sample act as a magnet? Like will it pick up a small staple or tiny piece of iron on its own?
