Congrats on the find. Doesn't look like copper to me. I usually see this type of build up on other metal tags or tokens.

Hoping I am wrong and update after electrolysis or peroxide bath and some scrubbing.

rusty find for sure..hope its a keeper for you.

Nice find. All of the deterioration from the ground lightened it up quite a bit. They usually weigh over 10 grams. I found 6 so far this year and they all are a lot lighter. I'd like to hear about your electrolysis unit. Is it home made? Another thing about copper in the ground, it gets green patina as it corrodes. Was there any green?

so is it toasted or just totally rusted?

It rang in around 79-80. So not near the iron range. I even air tested it the same reading when out of the ground

Definitely not set on it being a large cent because of how much corrosion is on it. Definitely could be anything

I have a home made electrolysis setup using a 5 gal bucket and a cell phone charger. It works pretty good. I leave most objects in for 10hrs

Here is a kg v penny I cleaned with electro

Out of the ground pic and after pic

Not saying it is but it looks the same way two of my large cents were when I dug them. Bubbly and crusty! :)

Your mystery item is a reed from a organ. I've found tons of them. I originally thought iron but after seeing the update pic I also believe it to be a very crusty coin.

Even with the updates I would say it looks like iron. The bubbles on the disk are rust. Copper suffers from corrosion and not rust.

I have found two large cents this year and they rang up as 86-88 on my Teknetics.

I hope I'm wrong and that's it's in fact a killer coin!

Sent from my iPhone using TreasureNet

Also a possibility, maybe the coin was next to iron in the hole.

Im hoping its a LC for ya...but the VDI reading dont mean squat sometimes..ive found iron washers read in the 80s before...but I have found bubbly coins too...keep trying to get some detail off that

Doesn't look like I am ever gonna figure out what it is. I went to the mountains for the weekend and left it in the electro bath all weekend. Nothing readable that I can see?

It's definitely iron. Rusted iron will, during electrolysis, see the rust (brown arrow) flake off with a layer of black (black arrows) underneath covering the bare, pure metal (gray arrows), which is what I see in this pic.

Looks like a knockout from an electrical box with the bent tab still noticeable.
