Possible Dip Pin Point?

Sheesh. An edit here, and I'd edit that subject heading if I could determine how. Senility or just in continual detecting mode? Please understand I meant to type pen point.

I recovered this item at the site of a purported short-term Yankee camp, what appears to be brass-encased lead with a shallow "well" at the tip, .43 inches in length, .17 inches in diameter at the base and .09 at the tip. The well depth is maybe .06 inches. Has anyone else ever found such an item or know of a writing utensil that might accept this? I'm only speculating on the pen tip idea, but don't know of any other purpose it might serve. As always, TIA!!!

Possible scribe for an old carpenter's square?

I'm not thinking so, deepsecrets, being hollow-tipped and made of brass maybe .012" thin. At present I guess I don't dare rule anything out. It remains a mystery piece.
