I dug this today in a pasture on what used to be a large plantation dating from 1790 - looks to be hand wrought iron and pretty heavy - can anyone help identify this? Some distinctive work can be seen - has rivets and saw-tooth like indentations where the metal was bent over the lip. From the top to the end of the handle is almost 9 inches.

ETA: This appears to be a curry comb that could date back to the mid-1800's - thanks to Mark B, 4-H, and BigCypressHunter for tracking this one done - KUDOS!!

It looks like a very worn part to a sickle bar.

Is there a way you can clean it to see if there is any other info available (like a number or such)?

Also, do you have something to reference it for size?

LOL That wasnt my first thought but it looks like it very well could be the correct ID. Great pics from 4H Mike! :icon_thumright: I can see where it had a wooden handle.

Wow folks! I just knew someone out there could ID this - that's great!! The area this was found in was possibly the site of the Plantations Carriage House/Stables which were burned by Union Troops during the CW - is it possible that this dates back to that era? Thanks to all!!

Yes - it's certainly possible. Most likely not a military related item, but might have been in the barns that were burned - or even lost 50 years later.

By the way - welcome to TreasureNet!

one of you all to tell me what a curry comb is.
To comb/groom a horse's coat. Its a useful tool in removing dirt, old hair, and debris from your horse.
