Possible button? I have not seen one like this. Please help ID this one.

I found this button looking item under an 1800's sidewalk that was tore up a few weeks back. It has some strange markings on it and I have been starring at it for some time now. My imagination has formed many different images and ideas. I think it may be a button but, to be honest I really don't have a clue. I am wondering if anyone out there may know what this is. I thought maybe a homemade button or possibly a military one? I am just grabbing at straws. If anyone has an idea or even a good guess, I would love to hear it. Thanks for everyones help in advance!

My guess is - an attempt at a homemade button maybe from a Lead bullet

Is it Lead, as it appears to be in the pics?

Looks to me to be a homemade Lead 'Plug', to plug a hole from leaking water or the like. Seen many examples in the fields I hunt.

I now see the no.s '22' (and maybe other no.s) which were in the piece before it was bitten, those are teeth marks

Possible Lead Seal.

Boy it sure looks like teeth marks. I can see 4 distinctive bite patterns around the edge, probably front teeth from a child.

I just can't even imagine seeing a kid chewing on this. But, you never know. I'd still have to say some type of tool or crimping device made the marks.

You have heard the term "bite the bullet"? Soldiers were given lead bullets to bite down on during surgery. I dont believe they realized any danger.

i kinda agree on the childs teeth.... it has lines that left groves, not worn off yet
