I found this button looking item under an 1800's sidewalk that was tore up a few weeks back. It has some strange markings on it and I have been starring at it for some time now. My imagination has formed many different images and ideas. I think it may be a button but, to be honest I really don't have a clue. :dontknow: I am wondering if anyone out there may know what this is. I thought maybe a homemade button or possibly a military one? :dontknow: I am just grabbing at straws. If anyone has an idea or even a good guess, I would love to hear it. Thanks for everyones help in advance! :hello2:

Great pics :icon_thumleft:
and interesting find :icon_thumleft:
My guess is - an attempt at a homemade button :icon_scratch: maybe from a Lead bullet :dontknow:

Is it Lead, as it appears to be in the pics?

Looks to me to be a homemade Lead 'Plug', to plug a hole from leaking water or the like. Seen many examples in the fields I hunt.

Exactly Cru. I was thinking along the same lines. Carved out lead through boredom.

Changed my mind.

I now see the no.s '22' (and maybe other no.s) which were in the piece before it was bitten, those are teeth marks :o

Possible Lead Seal.

Boy it sure looks like teeth marks. I can see 4 distinctive bite patterns around the edge, probably front teeth from a child.

You have heard the term "bite the bullet"? ;D Soldiers were given lead bullets to bite down on during surgery. I dont believe they realized any danger.
