Hello! I was so excited to find this forum. My son found this item near several others he found a few days ago. I have tried to figure out what it is but have come up empty. I am posting a pic of the other items found nearby just for extra context. We are in coastal South Carolina. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Tnet from Toronto Metalmoma! :hello:
If you could also post a pic of the back of this piece that would help.

It looks like a late-19thc sash buckle that has had the back attachment torn out of it.
But what I find interesting is the stamped design on the front, it almost looks like crossed baseball bats. :icon_scratch:

Thanks! The 2nd and 3rd pic are actually of the back. I think it's confusing because I flipped the top pic so it looks like they are all the same. Lol Here's a zoomed pic of the back too.

The baseball bats could be musical instruments as both ends appear to flare out a bit. The pair of circular things at 9 o'clock in the first picture could be cymbals. The 3 squares at 3 o'clock could be sheet music. The cone-shaped thing at 1 o'clock could be a horn.

That makes sense, a Marching Band sash buckle.

Thanks very much for clarifying this Metalmoma, if I'd taken the time to 'brightened' your pics up a bit, I would've noticed this. :laughing7:
It sounds like invent4hir might be onto something with the suggestion that this might be from a Marching Band.

I think you're on the right track, but the 'baseball bat' items look like drumsticks to me and the circular item forming the ring might even be a drum. Marching band would make even more sense in that case.
