Dug this along a river. Shoreline was used extensively for fishing, hunting and commercial applications since 1880. I already broke a piece off of the upper lip. After that I quit trying to clear off the dirt or to clean it. I have heard of early "reusable brass" shotgun shells, but they do not seem to have two pieces (upper lip). Most of the online examples show one complete brass hull, almost like a modern bullet casing.

Any confirmation?

Shell or piece of junk from the quarrying building that sat in that spot (1880-1910).... ?

Looks like a match safe to me. Boyscouts had something similar.

I think it may be an old lipstick tube. They’ll be some writing on one or both ends showing the manufacturer if it is.

Nope. Not a lipstick container, nor a match box. It is very heavy and the contents with the "tube" are very solid. Since it is heading toward the "not very valuable" pile, I took the top off. There appears to be threaded groves indicating that top (when not corroded) could be removed easily. Also it appears like a dimpled rubber seal with a puncture is near the lip. I will try to post those photos:
