Waiting on Don T. to get back to me, but he thinks it might be 4th Ct. Regt. This thing is so fragile, every time I try to get more detail out of it, I lose pieces around the rim. I've gone as far as I'm going to go with it. Appears to have a "4" in the middle, surrounded by what looks like "Y"'s or fish tails. (dolphins were used on some Ct. Regimental buttons) The upper left edge of the 4 is corroded away, but the outline is there as you can see. Measures 20mm....but should be about 21mm as outside edging is corroded away. Button was about 6" down. The surface is bubbled quite a bit. Not like the USA button I found last year. Cannot find a pic of this particular variant. Makes me wonder if it is a Regt. button at all. DARN SOIL! This was my first time out, which was Thursday.

What Ryder Variety is that in your avatar? Got a pic of the obverse? Looks incredible. When did you find that?

I guess it could be a 4?? I'd like to see what Troiani thinks. Fertilizer is tough on pewter buttons.

I'm not convinced, but will await the opinion of the expert. In terms of stabilization (since someone asked), they can read my post on "How to Clean Buttons" in the Cleaning and Preservation section of the forum.

Hoping that you will update this thread with good news.

Cheers,

Buck

Looks Promising :)
dang I hate those 'flakers', I got what I was sure was my first 'USA' the other day and it disintegrated
inside the little box I stored it in while continuing my hunt..(so now my box has padding included)
HH !! Herbie
