Possible 2 meteorites and unknown rock

Hi to all. Just joined and found several topics that are dear to my heart. I have been studying this board and other places for the last month about meteorites. I live in the south east part of New Mexico and recently decided to look for meteorites in many of my Indian artifact sites. I am using a stick with a strong magnet. The following pictures show some of my finds. I feel these are closest to the real thing(from reading a lot). None of the possible meteorites leave a streak and are heavy. They all stick to a magnet. The two smaller stones strongly stick. The big heavy rock is weird. It is mildly magnetic. The dark iron looking spot attracts stronger to a magnet.

Here's another view of the 195.61 gram specimen with reference quarter.

WOW, they have several characteristics of meteorites. I'd be excited if I found something like that in Kansas. Hopefully some of our experts will post soon.

I hope they are !!!

I am hope the above rocks are meteorites(at least the 2 smaller ones) too. I have perhaps 30 smaller samples from the same area. These I wonder if they are magnetite. They are a dark grey or brown with no fusion crust that I can see(most but not all). No streaks left on the rough side of porcelain tile and attract a magnet strongly. One seems to be a mix of metal and stone, so much that I put a small magnet on one part of the stone and it immediately jumps to the side with metal. These rocks seem to be scattered in a half mile area of the desert, with nothing man made nearby(except Indian relics). So far have found everything with a magnet on a stick. Probably take a metal detector there this weekend to see what else I can find. Does anyone know if magnetite or hematite is common in the south-east area of New Mexico? I am not finding this stuff in other nearby areas though.
Appreciate the response Rob in KS,
Jim

Here is a pic of the other samples that stick to a magnet.

Here is another unknown.
Mildly attracted to a magnet.
That's all for now.

I would have thought that some of the experts would have posted by now. Be patient, give it some time. I'll bet everyone is out hunting, not sitting in front of the computer. Nice job on the photography. If it is hematite, somebody should be able to tell from the great pix. Is that desert varnish on some of them? I've read about it but never seen it.

I think I have read that there is magnatite / hematite in the southwest. you've done all the simple tests, the only other one is a nickel test. I don't know much about that test though, just what I've read here.

I'll keep an eye on this thread to see how it turns out

I may order the ni allergy kit after I get some input about the possibilities of these stones. I wondered that also(desert varnish on 2 stones).
thanks Rob in KS

I get pieces similar to the first pic posted every time I go out to that location. Is this a waste of time? Is there any experts out there? Yes, no, maybe or do more reading? Thank you,
Jim S.

I am certainly not, nor claim to be, anything like a meteorite or geology expert. But, I drive a car and see many others every day made from metal that came from good 'ol earth. There is a LOT of terrestrial magnetic metal kicking around. Magnatite, hematite, iron ore, bog iron, etc., etc. A large percentage of this planet is metal in varous forms.

Thanks for the info Charlie P.
The colors are similar to magnetite pic with some, but not the texture.
I don't know what they are, but I am still collecting them.
This time I found a small valley with perhaps 20 more pieces.
This is about 2 miles to the south of the previous spot I was collecting.
Here are 2 pics of one.
Below is a description and some text I prepared for another forum, but am waiting to be approved to post there:
I found this rock in Eddy County New Mexico 5/15/07.
It may have a dark brown fusion crust on much of it(or desert varnish?).
It appears about 2/3's of the rock was buried and the solid dark brown part was above ground. That is the way I found it. It immediatly stuck to my cane magnet and I pulled it up to look at it. Looking at it with a magnifying glass I see alot of sparkel(metal?), especially if I move it about some. This day I also found several other rocks that stuck to my magnet. This was the largest and what I consider to be the best canidate for a possible meteorite.
What do you think? Possible metorite or a earth rock? I found several possibles(attracted to magnet)in a perhaps 100 yard area. Prior I was working
an area about 2 miles to the north and found approximately 40 rocks that stick
to a magnet. Most stick very strong and some midly(can still pick up with cane magnet
without it falling off). I have grinded off some corners of the previous
pieces and have got either a dark metalic grey or lighter steel grey.
One I ground the end off to see a metalic surface with white irregual specks in it. Streak plate shows nothing on this one(pic). Most of the pieces I have found do not have a streak. A few do with either dark grey or reddish brown. Those I guess are either hemitite or magnetite. I pretty much do not know one rock from another. These areas are near where there are indian sites and I have been to them over many years. Only lately have I thought about looking for meteorites. I hope something comes out of it and my explorations.
Thanks
JS

i recently found some rocks similar to the ones you found but smaller they all had a shine to them but i did have a magnet with me to see if they would stick would love to hear what you found out about yours!!!
