Pulled this from a place that has been mostly a source of disappointment (like one day sifting 2 huge dirt piles and not even a marble much less a coin or button).... 736 bottle caps later and then this. Been 26 years since the first and only other one I've found....

It's about as monkey'd up as possible...but, not every day you see one. Found right before a big rain, was in a hurry so i just put it in my pocket and hunted as long as I could. Leaving the site I rinsed it a little in a puddle and realized there was the one hole, thought I saw the "P" and "O" and tried not to get too excited...:tongue3:

Wasn't sure I'd get a date, put it in Linseed oil over night.. 1863 it is!

excellent find. I believe that is the first one I ever seen posted that was dated during the civil war

Amazing to think that such a small thing can hold so much history. Never be able to find one in my neck of the woods, but definitely on my dream list. Many congrats!

Nice! Very very nice!! Congratulations

Wow !!!!! speechless !!!! Congrats !!!!!:headbang:

Fantastic find!

Thanks for the well wishes.

Here are some more pictures for scale, as to how small this tag is compared the other earlier one... pretty sure the servant is 1839. My same hunting buddy and I found this one many moons ago. He didn't come with me last week (to his spot no less) cause hims back hurt..... :laughing7:
