I could use some ideas as to what this thing is. The "Porter Cable" cast insignia is the only marking. No numbers or letter anywhere. I paid $3 for it.
As it's lying in the dry dirt and grass, I'm looking at it for what it was and "What it can Become."
I liked it because it's heavy and has mounting holes so it can be mounted down solidly. The counter-balanced crank raises the whole column about 8"-10". The top lever allows the full barrel to be revolved 360 degrees and indexes with the side pin at three positions. Inside the hollow cast iron barrel are dual "roller skate" rollers on the bottom and two more on top at each end.
One could get a solid brass/steel 2" O.D. shaft that can be put into the hole and the side thumb-screw locks that shaft from moving in or out and from rotating. An 18" shaft can be moved any length and left hanging out. Because it weighs about 60 lbs., it has plenty of solid mass and a wood carving vise/base-plate could be attached.....
Do you have an idea as to what it was originally made to do?
Thanks for your help and time,
Bill
