This Royal Bayreuth (wording on bottom) porcelain object was dug up with among other items. Would this be a pipe smoker's holder? My google search doesn't turn up anything like this.

Dimensions are 6 inches long with the top of the handle 2 inches off the table. Have sent the pic to the RB collectors' group but no reply yet from those guys.

Matt, that kind of makes sense. However, compared to the other dishes in the link, mine has walls so low, it wouldn't hold very many nuts or snacks :-) Thanks for the response.

Matt is correct; it is a nappy dish. During the 1860's, all flat dishes were called nappies, and were advertised as such. Most people use nappy dishes today for bon bons, mints, or some small refreshment. Nappy dishes also made there way to the stove top as 'spoon rest.'

I'm not sure of the pattern because there are so many, but it is probably in one of the 'rose' patterns; like Rose Tapestry, which has shades of greens, burgundies, and of course, roses.

Neat find :) Breezie
