Dug this last week at a site that has been plentiful with lead roundballs from a1850-60s military camp. It was a ball of rust but electrolysis has given its shape and design back. It looks like a pommel from some edged weapon, as it has signs of a rectangle tang running through it and beaten into a blob at its butt end which also shows a flat piece of iron acting as a sort of washer. I see three parts to this, and I am not ruling out fence finial but I doubt it would have needed to have been that complex a design. So what is your thoughts on this one?

It's very small, I don't see a fence post finial though. :icon_scratch:
I agree with your theory that it may be a pommel from a 17thc knife or dagger.

Here is a pic of it in my hand where (if it were a pommel) it would position, just for size comparison sake.

Lol.....well, it was posted in the "what is it" forum and not a whole lot of feedback yet. I reckon i could have taken a pic of it atop a wrought iron gate for size reference as well......but that may have been suggestive just the same. I would like to know what others think and I am sorry if I mislead any, it wasn't my aim.
