I found this today just under the surface. It was in a wooded area on a hill side. The area has been in use for hundreds of years. I am wondering how old it is and what exactly it's called

Overall length is about 6 1/2 to 6 3/4"

There is a hammer on the back

Thanks

No idea but, considering theres still some wood handle left to it probably under 100 years, most likely under 50.A few things depend on it.

yep, looks like a roofing hammer and still has wood on it.... I've seen some older tools still being used with replacement handles but like what was said, not as old as you may think

Age Schmage..........doesn't matter how old it is. It's a very cool find.

Maybe. I put a short handle on a small old axe with the poll mushroomed to almost nothing and carried it a lot of years for hunting. The hawk handles are around sixteen inches after I cut them for optimum throwing making the old one much better for sitting down. Less conspicuous too. Your style followed hawks kind of and by comparing them a single,or two cuts can shape yours more like a hawk. But the handle won,t take the abuse of as much throwing. Appears recoverable though and usable unless you desire to save as a cool find. Yours to do what you will with and yes,a cool find.
