Hi Folks,

I am posting this on the behalf of my hunting buddy. It appears to be a soapstone or other polished stone. It is a perfectly good smoking pipe no defects. Has a hand carved into the bowl, arm being the pipe stem. The thumb you can see. A lot of hand done work on this one.

Any input on this peice. Age??

It was found where ws find nothing but points. Not too much in the way of other debris.

I think he found a native polished stone pipe.

Any help appreciated.

You assume I know what that smells like.
LOL, NO it smells like ocean

It's the real deal. Not a lost present peice, I'd bet on it.

It was found in a spot that is quite treacherous to get fo. Never see signs of current human activity when I make the trip there.

P.S.
This area was a big deal during original contact period. Perhaps Native, but last 500 years.

Need better pictures, close up of pipe, inside the bowl and closeup of the stem and end of stem.

I have nothing.
#1 & 3 photos enlarged look like file marks-was there files around at the time this was made? :dontknow:

Very cool. I'm not sure if it's Native made or not. I wish you luck.

Yes,
I see those striations too. I believe was ground on orvwith something, definitely. File, or something else not to sure...

Looks like some residue still in the stem and bowl, light 'er up!

Modern pot pipe similar to these:

Lol.
He really thinks this is his priced piece right now. Hes found it where hes found Vosburg, Saint Anne Varney, and some other great stuff. So I guess I can see where he is at on that. We also find old bowls. Here are some of mine.

He has some rediculous old clay pipes. Inremembernine he has is hand carved clay picture on it with date. Turned out to be 200 years. Looked more.modern then this. Anyway. That's why I thought I'd ask.

Your most likely right.

If I had to make a call, based on the photos provided, I would say there is a 95% probability it is not an old native American made pipe.

the serrations made on the pipe were likely the remnant of the stone saw used to shape the raw material into the rough pipe shape and / or the filing used after sawing was completed.

Either way the parallel lines are not what I would expect to see in an authentic old specimen.

The bowl does not looked like it was gouged or carved out. Instead it appears to have been milled out with a flat bottom.

Difficulty in reaching the source location does not indicate in and of itself this is an old native American made pipe. The finder reached the location, so others could have as well.

If you could view this item under high magnification you may find very small metal shavings somewhere on the surface. By high power I am talking 60X or higher.

A story of interest similar to this:
A co-worker brought to the office a few years ago a turtle effigy pipe which an elderly female friend of his used to smoke her weed in. The material was not steatite, but a dark porphyry hardstone. I thought he was taking a risk just bringing that into a secure location, but he was ok with it. Anyway it reeked of weed, had what I thought an old patina and no visible machining marks. I took many clear high definition images of the pipe from multiple angles to show some other relic collectors at the Collinsville show. When I showed the images to a few other collectors, one in particular recognized the material and the pipe form as one which was highly made back in the 70s.

It happens.

This is simply an opinion and does not imply its not an authentic native American made pipe, nor does it imply it is. I recommend taking to a relic show and having someone view it in-person for a better opinion.

July 17 the Northeast CSASI society is having a show at the Lehigh Valley Relic Show Schnecksville Fire Co. 4550 Old Packhouse Rd. Schnecksville, PA 18078

Looks more like a modern day herb pipe than an Indian artifact pipe, the scratches Dognose talks about are signs of modern day made..

I like that stone love to find a big piece of green soapstone to make a pipe .

Homemade hash pipes in the late 60s were small like that one. In eastern Pa, green serpentine was favored, but also burl walnut with ivory cigarette holders for stems. One summer, the feds had done such a good job of interdicting supplies that pot wasn't to be had for love or money. But Lebanese hash was everywhere, which little, dainty pipes handled perfectly.

Don't ask me how I know this.

The top two clay pipes are 1880-1900 probably from Mogadore Ohio

Lebaneese Hashish,
Lol. Now this went to somewhere I didnt see.

Thank you Unifcace. I know back in 60s it was wicked illegal but catchy, so supply and demand.

Thank you for that tid bit.

I went for 3 usual length hunts passed 4 days. Depressing not to find a full or include one. Not even a half piece. Ugh
Anyway. Need that rain. Thinking about new spot tomorrow.

Thanks

Here's another interesting pic with saw Mark's I found. A deer antler.

Looks like anatler worked. Perhaps their was a small pioneering village at this sight a bit later.

Just wierd finds in seriously not farmn fields.
Farm foods are good.
These are wierd

Thanks for input
