Police Fatally Shoot Grandfather, 72, While Searching the Wrong Home for Burglar, Blame ?Poor Lighting? | Video | TheBlaze.com

Police in Fort Worth, Texas, are blaming “poor lighting” after two officers went to the wrong home in search of a possible burglar and ended up shooting a 72-year-old man dead in his garage. The officers, who are both in their first year with Fort Worth PD, were responding to a burglary alarm on May 28 when the tragic mistake occurred.

“Due to poor lighting conditions, and officers attempting to arrive on the scene undetected,” the cops approached the home of Jerry Waller by mistake, according to an affidavit. The house they were actually supposed to go to was across the street.

The two officers, B.B Hanlon and Arpie Hoeppner, were searching around the home with their flashlights when Waller emerged from his home armed with a handgun, investigating who was walking around his property with flashlights.

Police radio transmissions obtained by NBC DFW captured what happened next:

“The guy came out with a gun and wouldn’t put the gun down,’ Officer Hanlon said. ‘He pointed it at Hoeppner, Hoeppner fired,” Hanlon said.

Both of the officers claim they identified themselves as police officers and told Waller to drop his firearm. They claim he instead lifted his firearm and pointed it at them. The police department is claiming the man was shot in self-defense.

However, Waller’s widow, Kathy, told NBC DFW that she was “disgusted” with the “trigger happy” officers.” She said her slain husband grabbed his .38-cal. handgun after seeing lights outside their bedroom and reported hearing yelling moments before Waller was shot dead.

Further, the man’s daughter, Angie, said she was “disturbed by suggestions that police may have felt threatened by a man in his own garage faced with unknown trespassers yielding flashlights.”

Waller’s family is calling for an independent investigation into the incident. The family has also accused the police department of “misrepresenting details of the incident” in media interviews.

what race were the cop and the dead man? If they aren't the same, then racism was definitely involved. Did the cop hate old people? Were the police "cop wanabes"? These are questions that need answers. What say Sharpton, Obama, Holder, Jackson and the rest? Only they know what really happened. Is Stevie Wonder going to boycott Texas now?

Fort Worth Police Affidavit Cites Lighting in Shooting at Wrong House | NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

If you ignore police commands and point your weapon at police you are going to get shot.
Stay in your home and call 911. Problem solved.

Call 911 wait 10-20 mins for them to arrive and be shot while you wait....

I am sure there is no possibilities the police report both new to force is inaccurate and police never identified their selves, or startled the 72 yo grandfather who simply turned towards the sounds he heard....

Make sure your at correct location before conducting search......You know even addresses on one side of street odd on opposite side...

Problem Solved

Typical blame the victim of a bad police shooting..

Typical of what?

Everything I said makes sense.

You just sound bitter for no reason.

The cops were not in his home. Guy had no reason to leave his home. He could have called 911 and sat in his house armed to the teeth. Had he done so, I guarantee he would still be alive.

He saw lights outside his bedroom and went to check. IT WAS HIS PROPERTY.

Going outside not the issue, I have done so many times armed over the years to check out strange noises.

"I guarantee he would still be alive."

Tell you what, I guarantee he would still be alive if the police had gone to the correct address to begin with, which was before he went outside.

Prove that statement wrong.......

Folks, you need to learn to "play nice" in modern society.

It is 2013. Time to start acting like it. Whether you agree with it or not, the world is a different place now.

It is not 1950 any more. No, the world is not a nice place. There are evil people out there.

TH, agreed that if the police went to the correct house he would be alive. Unfortunately, this man could not control the actions of the police that night. He COULD, however, control his own actions. He CHOSE to leave his home and now he is dead.

I am trying to illustrate a point that in our modern society, it is easier to play nice than to fight against it. I am not saying you have to like it or agree with it. But, it is already here and it is not going away. If you want to avoid tragedies such as this one, all one can do is make smarter choices on personal behavior.

Your correct it is 2013 not 1950 it is a lot more dangerous now than in 1950....

Here is something that is here and not going away.....

We each are responsible for OUR own safety and that of our family.

Our Supreme Court has already stated it is police job to investigate crimes and arrest criminals not to protect the citizens. (Warren Vs Dist of Columbia)....

Here is something else you need to realize, there are 10s of millions of us that take responsibility for the safety of our families and ourselves. We will not surrender our gun rights, we will not cower in fear waiting 15 mins or longer for police to arrive if they arrive at the correct location or at all.....

We are armed and we will use deadly force if it is needed to protect our family, our lives and our property..
