I have my Mom's Great Uncles (they were from Holland) pocket watch that I inherited about 17 years ago. He was a Merchant Marine. I have been able to figure some of the stuff out, but not all of it. Also is there a way to narrow the date down? Google can be your friend, but it doesn't always give all the answers.

Case back marked in side as follows.

Excelsa = ? Manufacture ?

0.800 = Silver content

Grouse Hallmark = Switzerland, made between 1882 - 1934 (Based on the style of the hallmark)

1028 = ?

Galonne = Gold plated silver

180704 = ? Serial Number ?

6 = ?

Outside of movement cover marked as follows.

Remontoir = A remontoir (french: remonter - 'to wind') is a pocket watch in which the key winding mechanism was replaced with a winding button.

6 Rubis = 6 Jewels

Inside of movement cover marked as follows.

Metal = ?

180704 = ? Serial Number again ?

Movement marked as follows.

SF = Slow/Fast and simply indicate which way to push the regulator (that arrow) to speed up or slow down the movement.

RA = Retard/Advance and simply indicate which way to push the regulator (that arrow) to speed up or slow down the movement.

Just tidying up some blasts from the past (including some very ancient ones), largely for the benefit of anyone searching the site for information.

It can be narrowed down a bit. ‘Excelsa’ was a trademark for the watchmakers Kenel & Courvoisier of Porrentruy, Switzerland from 1906, so the watch is between 1906-1934.

'Galonne' (literally 'striped') was the term used for gold wash (usually on silver), which was thinner and less durable than electroplate.

Thank you very much Red-Coat.

With the updated information you provided we went from a 53 year window, down to a 29 year window manufacture date range, shaving off 24 years. That's IF and that's a very big IF, I counted my fingers and toes correctly. Guess most of my research was close.

So Excelsa, would that be equated to a model name or a brand name under Kenel & Courvoisier?

Had forgotten I made this post all those years ago. It runs great and keeps time. Need to find a replacement hour hand for it and find a jeweler that is capable of installing it.

Again thank you for adding some more context and information to this. I'll copy it all to a document and print it out and place it in the safe with the watch.

Case back marked in side as follows.

Excelsa = Kenel & Courvoisier trademark.

0.800 = Silver content.

Grouse Hallmark = Switzerland, used between 1882 - 1934 (Based on the style of the hallmark).

1028 = ?

Galonne = Gold plated silver.

180704 = Serial Number.

6 = I'm assuming in reference to 6 Jewels again.

Outside of movement cover marked as follows.

Some updated and way better pictures of it, and especially of the Grouse Hallmark.

You're welcome. "Excelsa" was a brand for Kenel & Courvoisier, not a model.

It's a nice-looking classic watch.
