I picked this up at a farm auction recently.

The top is polished flat and is 1 3/4 inches wide by 1 1/5 inches, sort of oval. its 1 3/4 in height.

When I first saw it, it was resting flat side down in a box of other small round rocks. The others were not relics, just rocks. But this one stood out to me. The flat are is very smooth. At first I thought it was a plummet. I found a plummet in the early 80's, about 1982, made of hematite. That plummet was what would considered a classic plummet form being a Gilcrease plummet form.

Others viewed at relic shows do not have this form.

Then I thought maybe its a broken ax poll area, salvaged in ancient time.

I think the material is flint.

Looks like a head scratcher to me. Cool find.

Plummet/Weight. Looks like definite cordage wear and wear-patina? in the groove. COOL!

Chipping around the edge doesn't look like flint at all, in fact looks more like limestone/marble. Highly likely that it isn't NA but white man object.

It's not broken that is for sure. If it's a plummet it is a rare one for sure. I say it's a super find!!!!!!

Real interesting piece, seems like it is something that we should be able to recognize or identify. I am thinking since it was found at an auction, rather than on a known pre-historic site, that odds are it is a historic piece. Maybe some practical use for an early craftsman/tradesman, or a homesteader type item. I hope someone can come up with an identification. Looking at it with magnification might help.

Wrap a string in the groove and pull I bet it spins like a champ.
