Re: Pleeze help with a date on this Navy button

Can you show a clear picture of the back? The design may actually be key to dating it :)

On the backmark some key areas are obstructed by the corrosion, if it says exactly SCOVILL MF'G CO. WATERBURY can you see if there are asterisks(stars) or periods on either side of WATERBURY.

The closest button I see is Chief Petty Officer, that has a roped border with a foul anchor on a striped field with no stars or wreaths. Alberts NA131, says many variants and backmarks.

Age, well I feel not sure of saying 1860's but yet what I see appears to be in that range based on the backmark, that is basing the age on the fact it appears to be the era that there were dotted rings on the perimeter above the wording and also below the backmark wording.

Attached are references from Warren Tice's Dating Button book and Albert's Button Book.

Okay, great diagram, Looks to me like it's 131a on the top, and second from the left on the bottom. It really is in great shape, and I since cleaned it up a bit more.... I thought that it was a newer button, but the 1860's will do fine. Thank you!!!!!!! M :D
