It's an AN 28 (c. 1830-32) coin of Haiti— probably a 1 centime. Here's an example listed on eBay.

I'd say that cinches it, then: Republic of Haiti 1 centime, c. 1830-32.

Many years ago in a field I found one also and my thoughts were that it was most likely used as money here during the "hard times".. Mine is an overdate , I believe the AN date is the number of years after they Haiti decleared their independence from France and on my coin, the number AN 38, indicates 38 years after Indepedence, or 1841.

Thanks for that info don. Guess that makes mine a 1831. Yours is in very god shape. Coppers usually take a beating up here. But this coin seems to have held up well, maybe they had better copper? Or another metal in with there copper. Either way they seem to hold up. Thanks again for the info. Best of luck to you.

Note that the coin is actually dated on both sides, e.g., 1831 on one side and AN 28 on the other.

The Standard Catalog of World Coins, 1801-1900 lists three different "AN 28" date varieties of centimes:
1830 // AN 28, 1831 // AN 28, and 1832 // AN 28.

The 1831, presumably the correct AN 28 date, is the most common and worth $2.50 in Very Good condition. Exact mintages are unknown, but the 1830 and 1832 AN 28's are scarcer, listing for $20, VG.

Since the date on the obverse (wreath side) of your coin is illegible— at least in the photo— that's why I said, "c. 1830-32."
