I dug this up today and about 2 feet away I dug up an 1854 upper Canadian bank token. Both were deep, I have only found 2 civil war items but never an eagle button. And this one isn't smashed or nothing. Any input would be great. Thanks I would have put the post in buttons or whatzit but this page gets more traffic.

I can see the back mark well enough to read the last part but here ya go. This should narrow yours down for you

W. H. HORSTMANN / PHILA. 1820-1850
W. H. HORSTMANN / NEW YORK 1820-1837
W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS 1843-1863
W. H. HORSTMANN & CO. / PHILA. 1864-1866
W. H. HORSTMANN & CO. / NEW YORK 1837-1847
HORSTMANN BROS & CO. / PHILA 1859-1863
HORSTMANN BROS & CO. / NEW YORK 1850-1852
HORSTMANN BROS & ALLIEN 1852-1877
HORSTMANN BROS & DRUCKER 1844-1850
HORSTMANN / PHILADELPHIA 1893-1935

This one just says Horstmann & Allien NY

I wonder if being in Montana, that button would be from the Indian Wars Era :dontknow:

I think I found it in the alberts book under General Service buttons.
Button #95 looks close.

Yes its a civil war eagle button. Even in Montana, alot of the buttons on their (Indian Troopers) uniforms were produced during the Civil War. Congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Super find! I hope you're on to an old staging area or campsite :icon_thumleft:

Awesome, Congrats on an awesome find, don't see too many of those out here, too cool!

When Lincoln started the draft, there were some troops, ie Oregon, that were left out west to continue the fight with the indians. So you had soldiers in the same union uniforms used by those troops in the civil war. I also think your button is civil war. A nice stout one at that.

Nice looking button you got yourself. :icon_thumright:

Bravo my good man ...

CW buttons are of the best of finds ...
