It is simply just a rock from a stream.

It is simply just a rock from a stream.

Awfully quick to judge.

This is something that, if OP who is viewing it in person believes may be manmade, should be checked out by an expert. It is difficult to tell from the pictures, but the vague shape of it calls to mind artifacts I've seen from Iowa, namely that of grooved axes, e.g.,:

Be nice if you could take a better closeup picture of it in good light outside. It looks like lead.

I have been collecting for over 30 years, spent over 20 years walking creeks streams and rivers in Missouri and found thousands of artifacts. Maybe better pictures would show something but there is nothing in pictures posted that says it was man made. It does no good to encourage new artifact hunters to collect rocks rather than training the eye to look for artifacts.

In my opinion, based upon the pictures you posted and my knowledge of the area (I started hunting artifacts in Van Buren Co, IA 20 years ago) it is a geofact (natural rock) and not an artifact.

Edit: VBC is in Southeast Iowa, and you clearly said you found this in Southwest. Sorry for the confusion. Still think it is a geofact.

I know it's not an axe head. It somewhat resembles one of those plastic baseball bats that has been flattened.

Hint:
Today is the equinox ... 50 - 50 chance of capturing a clear, helpful picture in daylight.

I think its likely natural, although i like the net weight idea. It may be one of those potential artifacts that are just too difficult to tell without an expert eye, and Im not an expert by any means.

Based on that chiseled slit in the last picture, I doubt it's "just a rock". I'd definitely keep researching.

That is not chiseled, that is where either a fossil fell out or softer rock fell out. Blow up the picture, there are no signs of being chiseled.
