Hey all, How old would you think this bolt is?

I think its in the early 1800's since its square?

Thank you

Derek.

From what I see It looks essentially similar to a modern carriage bolt. I think one of the age your suggesting would have to be blacksmith made, in which case the head of it would show signs of being hammered into shape. But I may be wrong about when such things started being machine made.

I think it looks like a carriage bolt which are still used everywhere today. Maybe I'm wrong?

I've seen square bolts much newer than that well into the 1900's

If it was early 1800's, I'd expect a lot more rust.

I agree with cuda , this bolt was galvanized otherwise you wouldn't be able to see threads!

How big is it? Depending on the size it could be a galvanized bolt from a chain link fence.

It's been my experience, that when I find an Older Carriage bolt, the square part of the bolt or shoulder is somewhat longer than todays Carriage bolts.DSCN1922.webp
