I seem to be stuck for information. I have to do a project on 2 shipwrecks occuring in the Caribbean/West Indies between 1492-1521. We have to claim our ships and then no one else can take them. So far, the San Anton, Santa Maria de Grazia, Capitana, Santiago de Palos, Galega and Vizcaina have already been claimed by other students, obviously better at finding information on the internet than I am. I have to state

1) what the ship is?
2) where it was from?
3) where it was going?
4) what was it carrying? (this is important as we get to keep the treasure/cargo in the hold - something we may need in the future for this project)
5) how it met its end?
6) where the wreck is located?
7) and photos or sketches that illustrate this wreck

I have been searching for 2 days now with no luck. I have googled for information but I don't seem to have any luck. I hope you can help me.

The most famous shipwreck of all. The Santa Maria, Columbus's flag ship sank on the voyage of discovery in the waters of the Dominican Republic.

thank you both for replying. I have managed to find 2 wrecks - the Magdelena (possibly Magdalena or Santa Magdalen?) and Santa Ana at the site Blue Eyes suggested. Unfortunately, other than the fact that they're mentioned, there is no further information. I've been googling for hours with no success. There must be an easier way?

Evelyn,

Although the Internet is a wonderful tool, it is not the only one,and is sometimes not even the best tool. Try going to your local library and look for books on shipwrecks or on the early discovery of the New World. They might give you a better base to then use in your Internet searches.

Good luck with your project, and keep us informed.

I agree about the library - and that's where I would go if we were still in Canada. We're in Greece now and there are NO public libraries (atleast I haven't found any) and the school library has a very small choice.

Thank you very much though. :-)

Evelyn,

Lucky you to be getting a taste of Mediterran culture, not to mention the sunshine! No doubt the Internet is the best option in your circumstances. I notice that if you put the words Caribbean and shipwrecks into Google, the first couple of hits are for a website describing the very project you are working on, and including a map showing some of the early shipwrecks in that area. The hyperlink to "buccaneer references" that the site contains to does not seem to work, but if you just look at the "buccaneers.net" home page, there is plenty of info and links there.

Just a thought. I don't know if it fits your current project, but in 1519, Hernan Cortes deliberately scuttled nine of the thirteen ships he had used to invade Mexico, so that none of his soldiers could take the easy way out and sail back to Cuba. The only way they were going to leave Mexico was if they were able to succeed in conquering it. It's a good story with many facets. Perhaps it will not quite suit this project, but may be of interest for a future one. I thought at one time of trying to find the remains of these ships, but that is one for the future.

I wish they had had interesting projects like your current one when I was at school !!

Best of luck.

year 1504 during ans exploration voyage along the coast of Colombia the flagship of captain cristobal Garcia was wrecked on a reef near Punta de Canoas between Cartagena and Barranquilla. The crew was rescued by the other two vessels in the flotilla, But an undisclosed amount of gold nggets and emeralds that the explorers had traded from the natives sank with the ship.

Try the book New World Shipwrecks by Robert Marx, you will find what you need in that book.

Good luck,

Chagy..........

Hey Evelyn, what sort of class are you taking that lets you travel to Greece and makes you do hw on Carribean Shipwrecks? Man i wish i had a class like that!!!

Hi,

Have you thought of claiming a famous one by Mel Fisher. I believe its called the Atocha. I did not see that on your list of ships claimed so far.

There is a lot out there on where and what was found on that ship.
