Good evening all, we have found a small Civil War camp in our area and have been working it as time and weather allow. I have a few items that I can use some help with identifying including a button that I would guess was navy even though all the other buttons found have been eagle buttons with an I in the shield or just a plain shield.

The first picture is a pick like object that has a weld on the stem that makes me believe that it was attached to something or had a handle.

The second picture is the anchor button I am wondering about, it is beside a standard eagle button for size.

The third picture is an item that I have found several of at this camp but have no idea about what it is. If I had to guess I would call it a gun tool because of the wrench like design of the one end. The three ringer is for size.

Thanks in advance for any help. Rick

First item might be a hoof pick.

The button I'm still working on... Can you see what the backmark on the button says?

The third item could be a tent rope tightener or some similar item.

The back of the button is damaged as you can see from the picture below but I think it reads SCOVIL.

Montana Elf I have to agree with you, my item seems to be a belt keeper like the one in the link. It is funny that the link says they are not found often, I think that I have found 3 or at this site.

Mike, I did not notice the beetle until after I posted and I thought what the heck. BTW, my 2 year old granddaughter will run screaming to her mother if she sees one of these.

Nice work, Jim. It's different from keepers I've seen. I hope his isn't marked "Perryville 1988" though.

Yea... LOL... for the record I'm sure that dude made a typo.

I thought it was obviously a belt keeper and had to do some surfing to find out.

Montana, I just noticed your thoughts on the anchor button that you posted earlier and I am wondering if it is your thought that it is civil war period correct but not a military button?

BTW, I went and check my belt keepers for any markings and found none.

Turborick - I am no genious when it comes to the Navy Buttons...

I'm not going to guess what and when, without a proper backmark it'll be hard to date and with SO many british and American navy button variations I'd be a fool to claim to know anything about yours - except that I cannot find any that look like that from the CW era.

Someone with a proper button ID book should be able to help out.

Your button with the anchor is a Navy Chief Petty Officer's button. It is listed in Albert's book as NA 131A.

Here is a buckle my buddy dug in a strictly 1850 site with the same anchor,if I remember that design supposedly dates to the 1840's

Good evening all, cool buckle Kruger. Everything that we have found at this site has been consistent with the civil war period but there is no reason that there could not have been earlier use of the camp. I think that it is kind of cool that this navy button is found in central Missouri.

I have been told that the pick object is a nipple tool, I guess to clear plugged nipples. I have not been able to find any example that resembles this one. I will say however, that I do not believe that this item is a hoof pick. It is not as big enough or strong as any pick I have seen or been able to find pictures of.

Thanks to all for your thoughts.

Nipple tool. You're exactly right. :)

I think that button might have been re-used during the CW, which could explain an earlier button in a later site. This happened pretty frequently.

The little item with the curved sharp point is possibly a nipple pick. Used to clear cap residue from the nipple hole. Monty
