I just started metal detecting. I found this site using old area maps and historical literature about this
Area. The history dates as far back as the 1400's but I was only able to search for a short period of time from 1734 to the early to mid 1800's . This being my first hunt as well as my first find I was left clueless on what was found or how old they were. I guess I'm not as smart as I had hoped. Please if anyone can offer any information I would greatly appreciate it. I have also never posted anything before so if I need to add additional information please let me know.

Your very first picture looks to me like pieces of a trap like this download (3).jpg

Your little part with the keyhole looks like the lock for a trunk or jewelry box.The springs could be from an old mattress or springs from a chair.

You have a horseshoe, now some guys here can maybe give you more info on that.It could be animal specific (horse, mule) and shape could maybe date it?

Agree on leg hold trap parts. Regarding the shoe, it's a mule shoe. Horses have different shaped feet front and rear, mules have straight side walls on all four feet.

These are different sizes of horse shoes. Top row is for hind feet, bottom is for front feet.
The next picture is mule shoes.

Looks like you can't read the writing on the shoes, top right is a horse shoe, front foot, the rest are mule shoes.

Thank you ! Guess I won't be hanging this one above my door haha. I have another question, if you have time. Was this a waste of time or should I continue digging the area. The history of the fort is fascinating but because I've not done this before I may have got to excited with what I found. Thank you again!

If I had a fort or a place to hunt stuff like you are showing, I'd be all over it like stink on a skunk. You have what looks like a musket ball, also part of an old padlock. There has got to be some old coins there. The spring or circular looking things might be part of an early electric stove heating elements. Man I'd be searching and digging everything.

Welcome to the forums. Were you affected by the storms that hit our area yesterday and today?

Don't get discouraged if you have to dig a lot more iron to get to a coin and everything you are digging is giving you a history of your site, some of your items you dig in future might be able to give you a time frame that they are from, as different spots at your site could be older items than another spot at the site.

There are things more valuable than coins ( gold excepted) especially after being buried. Coin collectors are famously fussy.
If coins are what you want, find out where the Paymaster hung out.
Believe it or not buy pay in cash was used until mid 1961 when punch card computers came to be.

We had numerous power outages , some flooding and uprooted trees. Thankyou for asking and for the welcome. How is everything in your area?

We got hit hard! Not me personally but several folks lost their lives and many more were injured. A tornado hit the east side of Albany and destroyed a lot of homes and businesses.

Hi; What is the name of the Fort and when was it built ?? That will give us the info we need to help you in your search more by us being able to look up the Forts Architectural Prints which We culd use to identify the areas you want to search like the PayMasters Office, The Infantry or Calvary Quarters etc.. Thus you would be able to zoom in on specific areas. Remember: There is virtually nothing you can not find on the Net. We can tell you about the people stationed there. Their own personal Histories etc.. Some of what you are digging would look great in a local Museum there. That would give you some good PR which in turn would open up doors that others just don't know about. From what I see here most of the stuff is 1800's to early 1900's. The musketball is probably 1850's to 1880's. The crest of the stuff looks to be from that period. Someone here can date thisc stuff more accurately.
On digging, Yup you have a self made glory hole there. I'd be excited as well. Nice finds. Keep at it. Good Luck. We wait for your next Posts. PEACE:RONB
