Found yesterday in Civil War era site in KS.
The cylinder appears to be Copper or brass, about the size of a small tea plate. About 1 lb or so. Heavier and more rigid than you’d think. The handle reminds me of a pipe end and you can see the hole that goes through. Also metal. Some care was put into it as the handle is shaped and even has some paint left. There is some residue (now rust) near the exit as well. Fascinating. Following some common sense I believe the handle was facing down before the whole thing was bent in the soil.
