Hello all,

I am a total newbie here, but I have a question for you all. While detecting near an old farm, I found the following:

Is this an ore of some kind or is it simply some left over from a welding job, like slag? There's one part that has a nice silver gleam on it...

Please let me know your thoughts!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Tnet Au-seeker :hello:

Did it ring up on your detector?

Welcome AU-seeker! I don't think what you found is slag, as it has parts of the original shape still intact (inside curved surface and part of rounded rim). It will help to know if it's non-magnetic, but assuming that's the case, it may be part of a broken livestock waterer among other possibilities.

Unfortunately, my next purchase is a scale, so I'm afraid I have no way to measure it accurately. It's of average weight for it's size though (not exceedingly heavy or light for that matter). I would guess it has the same weight of an average rock it's size...

Does that help?

Au, you could weigh this, but considering it is almost certainly a cheap alloy (possibly zinc or aluminum based) for most probably a noncritical use, you might be wasting your time as it wouldn't tell you much (and as well, even if it could, you'd have to determine the exact volume also which is very difficult). It's got a clear man-made curved surface on one side. You might have better luck by measuring the curve and arriving at the approximate dimension (circumference) that way to get an idea of exactly what it was originally.

Im late on this one but I agree its a broken corroded chunk of pot metal, zinc or aluminum based. I find them all the time. It seems thats all I find. :D They put out a good signal. They often have white powder on the corroding surfaces.

Is this the pic with the man made evidence?

I have found broken chunks with no sign or little sign of being manmade. If I can find one Ill take a pic.

If man made I think an ID will be almost impossible unless other finds from same location could provide clues.

I'm thinking green check on pot metal alloy

OK I found a piece. This is the only example I have. Its either a cast aluminum alloy or a pot metal zinc alloy. I find this crap all the time.

Good example and clearly a man made piece. I think an ID on that piece would be very difficult as well :D
