Re: Please help me ID this button (clear pics)

I see what appears to be injection mold marks on each side of the shank so Im going to guess its a 20th century button thats made to look old like the drilled shank button below. I could be wrong but I dont like those mold marks.. I searched quite a bit but cant find it either.

Re: Please help me ID this button (clear pics)

BTW welcome to TN. I have a few questions in my attempt to help. Is the eagle carrying a flag? Is it solid brass or plated pot metal?

I'm going to say that "20th century" is probably on the mark. I'm going to add "earlier" to it, because I have about 25 or so, of them - they were in my grandmother's "button can" (along with hundreds and hundreds of other buttons).

It would be cool to post some pics of front and back so we can compare. I am particularly interested to see if your older buttons have the same small circular mold marks that are so common on modern cast items.

I dont know the proper name. I dont believe they are sprue marks. Someone told me these are metal mold injection marks but I am unable to verify this. All I know is that these small round marks appear to be 20th century. A good example is the lead coat weights. CW era weights do not have these marks. Note the same marks below on the 3 weights to the left being sold as CW era but I believe they are modern mold marks. I am hoping to get this verified or at least discussed by studied and distinguished TN members. :read2:

Re: Please help me ID this button (clear pics)

I can do that - they are all old, old buttons - though, honestly - I still steal one or two every once in awhile when we lose a button off a shirt.

I'll see if I can get some pics of the "collection".

Beth

PS: There is an entire coffee can full, so - I will take some pics, and if there are any that you are interested in seeing closer, I can pick them out. (my grandmother had them in an old tin cookie tin, until the bottom finally rusted out, and I put them in a coffee can) :laughing7:

bigcypresshunter not sure that metal injecting molding is the same as plastic, but if they were plastic the marks would be made by the ejector pins in the mold...

In case there is a misunderstanding, we are only interested in this particular eagle button that you have that matches the OPs button. No need to take pics of the entire "collection." You say you have 25 or so that match. Pic out the one button that matches the best and take a pic and we will determine if a closer pic is needed.

The style of button is called one piece drilled shank but I believe the OPs button was made to look old but is not. I think its latter 20th century. Thanks for helping with the ID.

Yes that was what I discovered in my research and another thought, the OPs button may be metal plated plastic, such as you will see in automobile radio knobs., dash, A/C controls etc. But it looks like brass or brass color plated.. :dontknow: The same marks appear on pot metal and lead items as well.

In response to the PMs I received Iding the coat/drapery weights. I know what they are. I am referring to the small circular mold marks. See picture below with red arrows pointing to the marks in question. The OPs button has the same mold marks.

It looks like plated diecast or pot metal to me also.

Welcome to TN newjak. It would be of a big help if you check back to answer questions. There are some differing opinions here and we are waiting on confirmation from Beth. In the mean time maybe you could tell us if the button is brass, plated pot metal or plated plastic. Thanks.

Re: Please help me ID this button (clear pics)

Good thing you reminded me - good memory, but sometimes its short. :laughing7:

Here is a couple of pics of some of the buttons - including 3 that have eagles on them.

None of the buttons in the collection has marks on the back - as you can see - good call on that - I never noticed.

If you want to see more of them, or specific ones (this is about a third of the can), I can do that.

Re: Please help me ID this button (clear pics)

I bet you have some Bakelites and Catalins. :icon_thumleft: I had an old button tin from my Grandma but sold it at the flea market cheap before I knew what I had. It saddens me to this day.

I see some eagles Beth but nothing that matches the OPs button and nothing that will help with the ID honestly. And as you noticed, no mold injection marks. Thanks anyway.

I believe the OP has a very modern button thats made to look old but I wish he/she would check back to answer questions so we could be sure.

Yes, there are Bakelites and some others there. Everyone is over 50 years old - I loved them when I was a kid, and I doubt that I would ever get
rid of them (of course, my kids mights some day, if they survive). :laughing7:

I see 4 different eagle buttons here, 3 metal, one which I assume is plastic - but - what I found most interesting is that NONE of them, not one,
has those marks on them. :dontknow:

I learn something new every day.

Beth

PS: The Navy ones might be from my Dad - he was in the Navy, and my mom lived with my grandmother while he was in the service.

I searched through hundreds of eagle button styles but I cannot find a match to this flying eagle which appears to be carrying a flag..

I spend most of my time out swinging my detector and don't do too much forum posting.
I'm not sure of what metal it is made from. It rings up at 05-28 on my ML Explorer and 81 on my Tekntics Delta.

BTW- Thanks for the welcome.

It is a modern garment button. I have dug many of these with thing such as YSL and CK on them.

Does anyone know what year(s) they started having the "marks" on buttons?

I sat for a couple of hours last night, looking at my buttons, and NONE, have those circular marks.
