Got out for about an hour in my backyard. Soil is dry as dust and difficult to dig. This was my first hit... looks almost like the shaft of a candlestick or something similar, but the ends don't seem to have any threads or other ways to attach. Both tips have beveled/bowl like shape. I hope pics are good enough. It also seems chrome plated, which is pitted a bit. THANKS!

Pipe tamper????

That's a really good guess. I didn't know what a pipe tamper was until I googled it. The strange thing is that, although my grandmother was a heavy cigarette smoker, I don't think anyone in my family smoked a pipe. My grandparents built my house in the early 50s and were the original owners. So this is a mystery!

Yeppers a pipe tamper, which could have been dropped by any one (not just family) walking through the yard. I'm sure there have been 100s of people in that area since the 50s. Neat find :) Breezie

I just found out my grandparents had one friend who smoked a pipe and would come over now and again, so that's one lead. The other is, prior to the house being build, the whole area of town was an artists' colony. A lot of late 19th- and early-20th century hippies frequented the town. I'll see if there are other comments, but I'm pretty confident that I can mark this as identified. I've now looked at hundreds of photos of pipe tampers... haven't found a match yet. Trying real hard so I can get a date on this thing.
